Captain (Cap) Tom Moore got up one morning and decided that before his 100th birthday he’ll walk 100 laps, 10 laps a day, around his garden in order to raise money for the charity NHS Charities Together. Cap said that his goal was to get $1,000.
When folks found out about the captain’s good deed, they started to chip in. And before he knew it, $1 went to $100 and $100 shot up to $100,000 and then…CHING, CHING, CHING, more than $20 million, from 700,000 plus people, was showing up on the Just Giving platform that the captain used in order to raise money for the charity group.
Judge Judy gave some money. The actor and singer Michael Ball gave some money. Even the Just Giving folks got so moved by Cap’s good deeds to the point that they did what they’ve never done before which was to give $100,000 to a campaign on their platform.
“This is the largest donation Just Giving has ever made. [The Campaign is] the largest total raised on Just Giving, the fastest growing campaign on the platform and has attracted donations and media coverage from around the world, “ is what the BBC folks quoted the Just Giving spokeswoman as saying about contributing to Cap’s good deed.
Captain Tom Moore is a civil engineer who served in the British Military during World War II. Cap told the BBC folks that he decided to help out the folks over at the NHS Charities because they helped him during his cancer treatment and recovery from hip surgery.
His daughter, Hannah Ingrak-Moore says she’s “so proud” of her father and that “he’s a beacon of hope in dark times and I think we all need something like this to believe in and it’s for such an amazing cause.”
Captain Tom Moore’s charity walk will benefit approximately 150 charities. Before I go, I have to tell y’all about another really cool thing that happened. Over 200,000 people have signed a petition for Captain Tom Moore to receive knighthood. Cap says “it would be marvelous” to get knighted by the queen but he doesn’t think it will happen.
I disagree, though. He is a captain who did the most selfless thing a person could do, which is to help others. And the last time I checked, being a decent human being is enough to get a kind hearted fella, like Mr. Tom Moore, knighted.
